Description

I was sitting in a cafe in Piata Unirii, Timisoara, on July 25th 2012, when I saw this guy breaking up with her lover, 70-75 metres away from me. I mounted my Sigma 300mm and... this is their last pictures together, their last embrace, the end of a love.

While, from what I understand concerning the actual event, both were breaking up, I am critiquing this photo itself, so I will critique the intent, in so much as I see it as well.

The obvious disparity between the crying woman and stoic male is a interesting contrast and the most visually catching piece of information. While one hand goes to comfort her, the other hangs limp as if he already knew what were to happen that day and is simply going through the motions.

Regardless, while I like the colors of the photo, their warmth and chill seem maybe too "romanticized" for this photo. If her face of anguish were not seen, obscured by his hand or shoulder, I would be perplexed by the title as if has a more"Beautiful Italy" feel. However, the colder hues works well with her face to highlight her sorrow, so it might just be an American looking in, than any fair critique.

The motion, the smaller depth of focus all center the attention on the couple, a smart move. Nothing new maybe, but it shows a quick mind and a grasp of the factors that worked together in this photo.

There is sadness and I can definitely feel it. While I am not quick to applaud a somber moment, I will happily congratulate a successful capture of true emotion.
